A conference, ‘Strengthening Regional Cooperation Across Transboundary River Basins and Landscapes in the Hindu Kush Himalaya’, held from 15 to 16 November 2018 in Kathmandu, Nepal, was organised by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD). The conference gathered about 120 people from the Hindu Kush Himalayan countries, including representatives of government agencies, academia and civil society, as well as ICIMOD’s strategic partners, such as the governments of Germany (BMZ), United Kingdom (DFID), Australia (DFAT), and IUCN. The intense two-day discussions focused on transboundary and regional cooperation in river basin and landscape management in the Hindu Kush Himalaya, touching upon important topics of poverty alleviation, sustainable development and biodiversity conservation.
Boris Erg, Director of IUCN ECARO, and Maja Vasilijević, Vice Chair of IUCN WCPA’s Transboundary Conservation Specialist Group, provided input in the conference programme by taking part in the expert panel and moderating a session on transboundary cooperation respectively. A call to action was endorsed by the conference participants and will be shared with wider community in due course.
