¡SALVANDO LOS CINCO GRANDES BOSQUES DE MESOAMÉRICA!
Los últimos cinco grandes bosques intactos de Mesoamérica, desde México a Colombia—son puntos críticos de biodiversidad y baluartes para la biodiversidad a nivel mundial. especies irreemplazables como el jaguar, la guacamaya roja y especies críticamente tortuga de río centroamericana en peligro de extinción; también son rutas migratorias vitales y zonas de invernada para aves migratorias. Juntos cubren más de 12 millones de hectáreas (tres veces la tamaño de Suiza); albergar aproximadamente la mitad de las reservas de carbono forestal de la región, ayudar a frenar el cambio climático; proporcionar agua y otros elementos vivificantes recursos naturales a 5 millones de personas; y albergar varios mundo Sitios patrimoniales, incluidas las ruinas de civilizaciones antiguas. Casi la mitad son gestionados por comunidades indígenas y locales.

La solución Esta iniciativa busca cambiar el rumbo. Nuestros objetivos para 2030 son: Proteger 10 millones de hectáreas de bosque, Recuperar 500.000 hectáreas de bosque que han sido reclamadas o taladas ilegalmente, Acabar con la ganadería ilegal.

SAVING MESOAMERICA’S FIVE GREAT FORESTS!
Mesoamerica’s last five great intact forests—spanning from Mexico to Colombia—are biodiversity hotspots and strongholds for globally irreplaceable species such as the jaguar, scarlet macaw, and critically endangered Central American river turtle; they are also vital flyways and wintering grounds for migratory birds. Together they cover more than 12 million hectares (three times the size of Switzerland); hold about half the region’s forest carbon stocks, helping to curb climate change; provide water and other life-giving natural resources to 5 million people; and harbor several World Heritage sites, including the ruins of ancient civilizations. Nearly half are managed by indigenous and local communities.

The Challenge Mesoamerica’s five great forests are being destroyed at an alarming rate: in the last 15 years, three have been reduced by almost onequarter in size. Illegal cattle ranching is responsible for more than 90% of recent deforestation. Poverty, drug trafficking, organized crime, and the impacts of climate change exacerbate the threats to Mesoamerica’s five great forests.

The Solution This initiative seeks to turn the tide. Our 2030 goals are to: Protect 10 million hectares of forest, Recover 500,000 hectares of forest that has been illegally claimed or cleared, Stamp out illegal cattle ranching.
